When your air conditioner is running but the air feels warm, the problem can range from a simple setting to a serious mechanical fault. Working through the possibilities helps you know whether it is a quick fix or a call to a technician.
Check the Thermostat First
It sounds obvious, but confirm the thermostat is set to COOL and not simply FAN. In FAN mode the blower runs without the compressor, circulating air that never gets cooled. Also make sure the temperature is set below the current room temperature.
A Dirty Air Filter
A severely clogged filter restricts airflow enough to reduce cooling and can cause the evaporator coil to freeze, which blocks cold air entirely. Replacing a dirty filter is the easiest thing to rule out.
Low Refrigerant
Refrigerant is what actually absorbs heat from your home's air. If a leak has left the system low, it cannot cool effectively and the air turns lukewarm. Low refrigerant always means a leak somewhere, since it is not consumed in normal operation, so simply adding more is only a temporary fix.
Frozen Evaporator Coil
Ironically, an iced-over coil produces warm air. If you see frost on the indoor unit or refrigerant lines, turn the system off and let it thaw, then address the underlying cause, which is usually airflow or refrigerant related.
Condenser or Compressor Problems
The outdoor unit releases the heat your system removes. If the condenser coil is caked with dirt or the compressor is failing, the system cannot complete the cooling cycle. These issues require a professional.
If the simple checks do not restore cold air, it is time to bring in a licensed technician before a small issue becomes a major repair.
